Long before “elevated takeout” became a trend, this small kitchen in Berkeley set out to do something different. No shortcuts. No compromise. Just precise cooking, thoughtful sourcing, and a belief that even a quick meal should feel special.

Over the years, it has become a neighborhood staple, known for consistency, care, and a quietly obsessive attention to detail.

Grégoire Berkeley is at 2109 Cedar Street, Berkeley, CA 94709, in North Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto, just around the corner from Chez Panisse. Chef Grégoire Jacquet opened it on June 26, 2002, and it's where the potato puff was born.

From UC Berkeley: about a 15-minute walk from the north side of campus.

By BART: Downtown Berkeley station is about a 15-minute walk south on Shattuck Avenue.

Parking: street parking nearby is limited, so walking, biking or BART is easiest.

Seating: a few tables outside, on the patio and in front of the restaurant. And of course, everything is ready to take out.

Potato puffs: our signature, crispy outside and light inside.

Spicy fried chicken sandwich: buttermilk fried chicken with spicy coleslaw on a French roll.

Seasonal sandwiches and salads: the menu changes every season. This fall: roasted butternut squash with Gorgonzola cream and candied pecans, rosemary ham croque-monsieur, and sautéed leg of lamb with tzatziki.

Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options are marked on the menu.

Can I order ahead? Yes. Order online for pickup or delivery. For orders over $200, use our catering ordering.

Do you cater? Yes. We cater events of up to 600 guests. Sandwiches come halved in our signature hexagon boxes. In-house delivery is $25 within 5 miles, with a $125 minimum.

Is there seating? Yes. We have a few tables outside, on the patio and in front of the restaurant. And of course, everything is ready to take out.
